Let’s talk about you...
The fact that your knee hurts and is preventing you from grappling the way you’d like…
Because if you're like most grapplers,
It's Probably Not Even The Physical Pain that's
Bothering You so Much
After all, as a grappler or mma fighter you're used to pain and discomfort...
What really hurts is not being able to move like you used to...
That you can't execute your favorite submissions, positions and transitions...
Without the fear of damaging your knee more and having to stop grappling for a long time...
Or worse... the thought of having to give up grappling forever...
That's What "Normal" Doctors and Physical Therapists Don't Understand
They'll tell you to "just take 4 months off and see how it is then" or
"Find a hobby that doesn't put as much pressure on your joints"
I say screw that.
It's not something I personally want to accept, so it's not something I think you want to accept, either.
Now of course, just ignoring your pain and hoping for the best is a recipe for disaster as well...
When You're Injured, You Want to Do Whatever You Can to
Rebuild Your Body and Get Back on the Mats ASAP
So let's look at what you can do to rebuild your knee.
And I'm not exagarating when I say you may even get better than you have felt in a long while.
It's happened to several of my clients, like David, a purple belt who had been dealing with knee pain for a long time, and even thought of giving up jiu jitsu altogether:
Before we get into how to ReBuild your knee, we first need to look at what you want and need your knee to be able to do again:
in Of course, I don't know how bad your knee currently is.
Maybe you just have a naggin pain in the tendon under your kneecap, or maybe your knee got completely ripped apart in a heelhook and it currently looks like a balloon, barely able to move at all.
So obviously the starting point is different for everyone, and the realistic end goal is obviously also different for a 23 year old stud his prime or a 52 hobbyist...
But ideally, we want:

A knee that doesn't hurt, ever
-
A knee that has full range of motion, no limitations in bending or extending
-
A knee that is stable, can fully support your bodyweight and more without giving way, in passing, takedowns and other scrambles
-
A knee you can kneel on without pain, so you can mount people without fear
-
A knee that can absorb shocks from impact, whether jumping, running, shooting for takedowns, scrambles etc.

Now, at this point you may be a little bit or very far removed from the above.
And it may take some time to get there, depending on where you are now...
And it will definetely require some work.
Because Just resting isn't gonna make your knee better.
Maybe good enough to walk around, but not good enough to grapple.
For that, you need the best methods and exercises to ReBuild your knee so you can grapple again.

First, you need
Knee ReBuilding Step 1: Optimize Circulation to the Knee so
Your Body Can Repair Itself
Your body is very good at repairing itself after damage…
But it needs the building materials (oxygen, amino acids and other nutrients) in order to do the repair.
These come with the blood flow.
So when that’s restricted the healing process is also restricted.
This is why icing your knee and excessive resting is almost always a big mistake.
Ice stop the inflammation signal, which is the critical first step of the healing process...
And both ice and too much rest decrease the blood flow to your knee, which is what brings the building materials to repair whatever is damaged.
So, what can you do?
In the very first part of the Knee Rebuilding System for Grapplers (more about that later), I show you how to quickly and easily optimize circulation in your knee using a simple trick with a rubber band you can buy off amazon.
Then,
Knee ReBuilding Step 2: Restore Normal Movement in Your Knee
It's quite likely that your knee movement is a bit limited...
Maybe it won't extend all the way, or maybe it won't bend all the way...
Or maybe both.
Either way, it's important to fix it, because a limited knee is always a fragile knee.
Now, simply trying to force your knee into motion is rarely a smart idea, especially when the injury is recent
In the Knee ReBuilding System for Grapplers I'll show you different ways to restore optimal movement in your knee, without damaging the joint, tendons or ligaments.
For now, let's move on to
Knee ReBuilding Step 3: (Gently) Work the Muscles Around The Knee, and Make them Stronger Step by Step
To Make up for the now weaker/looser connective tissue
for Your knee(s) need stability to function.
This normally comes from the ligaments, the joint capsule, the meniscus and the muscles around your knee.
Because you have knee pain, chances are your capsule and/or ligaments got looser due to your injury.
This makes your knee less stable, and in more danger of getting hurt again...
So it's even more important for you than for "normal" people to have strong stabilizing muscles.
Without it, it’s a fresh injury waiting to happen, over and over again.
So you need to (re)build the muscles that keep your knee stable and in the right place.
Get strong in these muscles and you’ll be stronger, more athletic and less likely to get injured again.
Now, the key is of course to pick the right exercises for these muscles…
Exercises that work the muscle… but don’t put too much pressure on the knee itself
Squats and lunges can be great for someone that’s got a healthy knee…
And later in the process they may become your friend as well...
But when you have a knee injury you need to scale back and do special exercises that work the muscle, but don’t hurt your knee.

At least as important as working on your knee itself though is
Knee ReBuilding Step 4: Check if the Joints Above and Below Your Knee are Tight, and Fix them if so
These are the hip and ankle.
You see, your knee is locked in between these 2 joints.
And it's very likely that your hip or ankle is stiff and not moving well…
This not only reduces your ability to optimally do transitions and positions like S mount, takedowns and scrambles...
It also makes your knee overcompensate and get way more pressure than is good for it!
If this is the case, you can do all the knee work in the world…
But if you don’t also improve your hip and/or ankle mobility, you'll just be going around in circles, never truly fixing your problem.

So you can move around better, and give your knees a chance to heal
Now, it’s not just bad mobility in the hip and ankle that can cause knee injuries.

Knee ReBuilding Step 5: Check if the Muscles Above and Below are Strong Enough and Doing Their Job Properly
With the knee, this are again the hip muscles (mainly glutes) and the muscles that control your foot and ankle.
Because if either the hip or ankle isn’t stabilized properly, guess what?
The knee will be put in positions that aren’t optimal for it... and sooner or later get hurt (again).
In order to make your knee feel great again, you have to work on the ankle and hip muscles.
If this sounds like a lot of work, it is.
And I can’t make it any easier for you…
What I can do, is give you the exact exercises that I’ve used with over a thousand people over the last 15 years…
This way, even though you still have to do the hard work…
At least you'll know you’re doing the right thing.
